The numbers include those who have posted their full birth date (38 percent), photos of children (21 percent), children’s names (13 percent), home street address (8 percent) and even details of when they are not at home (3 percent).

• Google Earth explores climate risks to California – "Google Inc. launched a new feature in its Google Earth Web site Wednesday designed to let Californians see the risks of climate change."
• Google allows publishers to limit free content – "Google Inc. is allowing publishers of paid content to limit the number of free news articles accessed by people using its Internet search engine, a concession to an increasingly disgruntled media industry."
• Obama science advisers grilled over hacked e-mails – "House Republicans pointed to controversial e-mails leaked from climate scientists and said it was evidence of corruption. Top administration scientists looking at the same thing found no such sign, saying it doesn't change the fact that the world is warming."
• Apple predicted to offer 300,000 iPhone apps, tablet in 2010 – "Research firm IDC believes the iPhone App Store will reach the 300,000 landmark in 2010, and more than 1 billion total mobile devices will access the Internet. The company has also offered its predictions on the Apple tablet."
• Twitter, Amiando, Obopay, And Playfish Are Named Technology Pioneers By The World Economic Forum – "Every year the World Economic Forum picks a couple dozen or so up-and-coming technology startups from around the world and dubs them Technology Pioneers. In the past, Technology Pioneers have included Google and Mozilla. Last year, Mint, Etsy, and Brightcove joined the club."
• It’s Google Friend Connect vs. Facebook Connect – "Just hours after Yahoo announced a planned implementation of Facebook Connect on its network of sites, Google announced that you can now use your Twitter credentials to register on Google Friend Connect sites. Friend Connect and Facebook Connect are both a means to quickly register for a site or service that requires a login, and it's likely no coincidence they announced competing deals on the same day. This could end up being a hard fought battle, because there's one major reason one-stop online identity is becoming important as we enter 2010, and that reason is paywalls."
• AT&T and Verizon agree to dismiss ad campaign lawsuits – "After AT&T agreed to drop a suit against Verizon for its "There's a map for that" ad campaign yesterday, Verizon also dropped a suit, filed in July, against AT&T's "more bars in more places" campaign, the Associated Press reports."

• Microsoft opens Marketplace to the masses – “Microsoft’s on-device marketplace is now available for Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1, allowing older phones to download the very latest in farting applications.Microsoft reckons there are more than 800 applications in the Marketplace: we assume that’s worldwide, as the UK offering seems somewhat Spartan. But everything you might want is there* along with the inevitable fart-noise apps that seem to be the killer application for smartphones these days.”
• Sports Authority To Sell Nintendo Wii – “Sports Authority will begin selling Nintendo products, including videogaming consoles and the Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus games, at some of its stores later this week, the sporting-goods retailer said.”
• Apple’s Black Friday discounts leaked – “Though it’s still a full 10 days away, Boy Genius Report got tipped off about what may be a major retail sale in the offing from Apple.According to the rumor, complete with flyer (pictured), Apple will be offering the following deals on the Friday after Thanksgiving:

  * up to 30% off on all iPods (except iPhone and iPod shuffle)
  * up to 25% off Macs
  * up to 15% off all accessories as well as Apple software and hardware.”

• Univision se hace amigos con YouTube – “Univision Communications and Google’s YouTube have cut a deal to put much of the Spanish broadcaster’s content on the video website. If you’re looking to catch up on the network’s popular telenovelas there, though, you’re out of luck.”
• ‘Unfriend’ Chosen as Oxford Dictionary’s 2009 Word of the Year – “Proving that social networking is a huge cultural force, the New Oxford American Dictionary has chosen ‘unfriend’ as its 2009 Word of the Year (WOTY). To unfriend means to remove someone from your friend list on a social network like Facebook or MySpace. The new word is an excellent choice as the 2009 WOTY because of its “currency and potential longevity,” according to Christine Lindberg, Senior Lexicographer for Oxford’s US dictionary program.”
• Adobe Upgrades Air and Flash: Mobile and Multi-Touch Support Added – “Adobe Systems will offer on Tuesday beta versions of upgrades to its core Flash Player and Adobe AIR technologies, with Adobe touting mobile device accommodations for the Flash Player.”

• YouTube Direct to Link Media Companies and Consumers’ Video – “YouTube has signed up NPR, Politico, The Huffington Post and The San Francisco Chronicle for YouTube Direct, a new method for managing video submissions from readers.
  Politico is among the media sites that will use YouTube Direct, to be available Tuesday, to solicit and select video submissions.The new feature, to be formally introduced on Tuesday, is a tool to make it easy for YouTube users to submit clips that news media companies can choose to highlight. The site plans to sign up other media partners.”
• The shifting sands of net debate – “The sand and deep blue sea of Sharm el-Sheikh are a magnet for winter sun worshippers – a place to have serious fun. This week, though, it is also somewhere to do some serious thinking about the future of the internet.”
• U.S. teens report ‘frightening’ levels of texting while driving – “A quarter of U.S. teens ages 16 to 17 who have cellphones say they text while driving, and almost half of Americans ages 12 to 17 say they’ve been in cars with someone who texted while behind the wheel. Teens say their parents are texting fanatics, too.Those findings are in a report released Monday by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project.”
• Verizon Mocks AT&T’s Ad Lawsuit, Commenting “The Truth Hurts” – “The nation’s largest wireless provider fires back in courtAT&T and Verizon, the nation’s second largest and largest telecoms, respectively, are at open war. With Verizon’s new Droid phone looking to challenge the iPhone as the reigning media smartphone, the pair wage battle in the court room over Verizon’s commercials which depict AT&T’s poor 3G coverage.”

• Windows 7 had 8 million testers, biggest beta ever – "Microsoft has revealed a bunch of numbers surrounding the development of Windows 7, and boy do they carry a lot of weight."
• Internet Can Help Save Elderly From Senility – "With record numbers of Americans online — more than 80 percent — and businesses, media, and TV entrenching themselves deeper in the internet, debate over the medium's merits is at an all time high. Some accuse the internet of being an insidious source of addiction. Still others attack the internet by jumping on stories of cybercrime.

• A fifth of Americans use Twitter, or something • The Register – "The Pew Internet and American Life Project handed Twitter either a massive PR coup or a trademark problem yesterday, by declaring 20 per cent of Americans were using the service – or something similar.

  In a chart headed "Who Tweets", the researchers said that 19 per cent of US adults were Twittering – or using a similar status update service."

• UPDATE 1-U.S. FCC staff recommends open Internet rule | Reuters – "Staff at the U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Thursday recommended establishing an open Internet rule aimed at restricting network operators from favoring some content over others along landlines and wireless platforms."
• Social Search from Google and Bing: My 8 Big Concerns – "The search engine wars took a dramatic turn yesterday, with Google and Microsoft both announcing real-time search deals with Twitter. Additionally, Microsoft struck a deal with Facebook to index status updates on its Bing search engine, and Google introduced Social Search, which integrates your friends' social networking information directly into search results."

• Microsoft’s Windows 7 Launch ‘Party’: Pass the Cringe – “Oops, they did it again.Microsoft is back at it with another attempt at a campy viral campaign — this time to promote its Windows 7 operating system, due out on Oct. 22.”
• Apple reports carbon emissions, touts green hardware – “Apple this week launched a new section of its Web site devoted to promoting the company’s energy efficient machines and environmentally friendly manufacturing techniques.The new feature, entitled Apple and the Environment, provides information on how the Mac maker has made efforts to eliminate toxic substances from its machines, and also worked to make its hardware highly recyclable.”
• Sony Announces Motion Controller for the PS3 – “Sony on Thursday unveiled a motion controller for the PlayStation 3 that will debut in spring 2010.The yet unnamed device will work with the PlayStation Eye camera, which tracks a user’s face, voice, and body motion. The motion controller will be equipped with two motion sensors, three axes gyroscope, and three axes accelerometer that can detect the controller’s angle and movement in someone’s hand.”
• Will Google Get To Scan All Those Books? – “Noting that the Google Book Search proposal poses challenges but also offers public benefit, a judge has granted a postponement on a fairness hearing between Google and associations representing authors and publishers.”
• Is Criticism Of Google’s Outages Unfair? – “Today, widespread application outages are a new experience and make news. Someday we may become used to them, though I hope not. I’d rather see the cloud become so reliable that we never notice its problems.”

• Amazon To Discovery: No, You’re Violating Patents – If "Amazon Vs. Discovery" in a patent infringement lawsuit sounds familiar, that's because it is: back in March, Discovery filed suit against Amazon alleging that Amazon's Kindle violates electronic book patents its held since November 2007.
• Netflix to Stream Content on Windows Media Center – Popular online video rental service Netflix is now available through Microsoft's Windows Media Center, where users can stream thousands of films and television shows.
• Microsoft’s My Phone Service Goes Public – Microsoft has opened up its mobile phone synchronization and backup service – MyPhone – which was until now in closed beta.
• GPS System Could Begin To Fail Within a Year – The Global Positioning System faces the possibility of failures and blackouts, a federal watchdog agency has warned the U.S. Congress. Mismanagement by and underinvestment by the U.S. Air Force places the GPS at risk of failure in 2010 and beyond. The problem: Delays in launching replacement satellites, among other things.
• Microsoft’s Next-Gen Search Engine Kumo Expected Next Week – "Microsoft has officially declined to comment on a Kumo debut, but the fact that the conference sponsors are scooping news on their own event suggests this rumor is either a publicity stunt or true."
• Google CEO Tells Grads: Turn Off Your Computers – Speaking at Penn's commencement at Franklin Field in Philadelphia on Monday, Schmidt advised, "you need to turn off your computer, turn off your phone, look at people who are near and around you and decide that humans are the most important things, not the other aspects," according to the Philadelphia Daily News.
